The Düsseldorf district of Oberkassel spans an area of 3.87 km², with a population of just under 17,000. Oberkassel stretches along a bend in the Rhine, downstream from vast meadow. The district is located within the Düsseldorf inner city limits and is densely settled.
The residential surrounds primarily consist of historic, valuable townhouses, often dating back to Wilhelmian times. Oberkassel is an extremely popular place to live, as it is home to many of the large “Altbauwohnungen” (apartments in old buildings) so popular in Düsseldorf, and also offers an excellent infrastructure. Some of the residences near the Rhine also provide great views of Düsseldorf’s skyline, and are among the most expensive residential areas in the city.
Luegallee is the district’s main shopping street. Apart from shops selling everyday item, you will also find many owner-run specialty shops and boutiques. A wide range of dining options, both in Luegallee and in the adjacent side streets, attracts visitors to Oberkassel from other districts.
Oberkassel is a popular place for freelancers, particularly lawyers, graphic artists, designers and advertising experts. Many artists have or used to have their studios in Oberkassel, such as Joseph Beuys, Gotthard Graubner, Günther Uecker and Jörg Wiele.
Oberkassel has two primary schools, a grammar school and the private Japanese International School. Another grammar school, high school and a Catholic primary school are located in the neighbouring district of Niederkassel.
Two bridges connect Oberkassel with downtown Düsseldorf on the right bank of the Rhine. The Oberkasseler Bridge heads towards the old town and city centre, while the Rheinkniebrücke Bridge leads to Unterbilk and Friedrichstadt.
